A Major Announcement Regarding Our Layout

The Central New York Model Railroad Club and Historical Society, Inc has been an active presence within the model railroading community of Central New York since our incorporation in 2002.  Many of you have visited our station south of Elbridge during our annual open house in November, or during our meetings Friday nights beginning at 7:30pm.  Either way,  those who have visited us are familiar with our layout, The Delaware and Ontario, and it is news regarding the layout that prompts my post today.

The current membership of the Society began an intensive discussion concerning our future following our annual open house last year, and the orientation of the conversation became clear by January:  The Delaware and Ontario has reached the end of its practical existence.  Though the layout has served the needs of many modelers and entertained countless visitors since its creation, the current membership of the Society feels that its dated design, narrow aisles, single era representation, as well as the high number of operators required for its effective operation, limits the ability of the Society to recruit new members and fails to position us well within the evolving changes in model railroading interests, design, operation, and technology.

A new modernized and multi-era layout plan based upon the Auburn Road and the Water Level Route between Solvay Yard in Solvay and Goodman Yard in Rochester was drafted and presented to the membership late this spring.  The Society recently voted to proceed with that plan provided we can boost our current membership by five regular members as of  January 1, 2016.  Our recruiting efforts are well underway and we will announce our success or failure just after the new year passes.  It is our intention to save certain sections of The Delaware and Ontario and to incorporate them into a separate, fully operational diorama should we achieve our goal and proceed with the new layout.

I'm sure you might be surprised by this news.  I will post additional updates here as news warrants, but, please feel free to reach out to us if you would like to know more as the brevity of this post necessitates the exclusion of many details.  We still meet at the station every Friday evening at 7:30pm.  Additionally, we will be exhibiting again this year at the Model Train Fair at the state fairgrounds in early November.  Please stop by and say hello.
